Thanks to John for posting THIS.
It struck me that I rarely write about hard topics like this unless I am right in the throes of them myself. Perhaps now is a good time to reflect, and to set a few things straight in my own mind.
The dog thing is very special to me, mainly because I truly love dogs. They posses so much that is appealing in a companion. Loyalty, an endless ability to be pleased to see me, delight in eating food, cuddliness, zest for life and so much more.
Holly and Ben were our first two - and when Ben got cancer it was very sad. We paid for his operation, but knew he would not have long afterwards. He stayed with us for another year, giving rise to the delightful little ball of fluff you see here.
Jasper grew and grew and grew and grew and GREW. He was always a very obedient dog, unless there was food in the offing. If you ever met him when he had finished growing, you will know that this little puppy bears not much relation to the lion/polar bear he became.
Jasper was a great personality, and he really did dominate Holly. I was glad she had some time with us on her own before she went. She was always a shy dog and slightly nervous.
Her passing was symbolic of the passing of my marriage too, because Fiona made it very clear that there were to be no more dogs for us. I have lived since then without the benefit of canine company. The days do seem more empty, and yet I have been glad not to be tied in that way, particularly as I have to travel a lot right now.
Maybe one day, when things are more settled. Who knows. Until then, the freedom is great, but I really do miss the doggies. They were fantastic, and I loved them all.
I don't know what it is with dogs and humans. There just seems to be a connection more than any other in the animal kingdom. I think we personificate cats, and think they're aloof and inteligent when in fact there just not a keyed into humans as dogs are. Dogs are really willing to be companions, and it seems they "get" the whole relationship thing. Maybe I'm mad but that's how it seems to me.

I agree, John. Completely.
