I wish it was that, I really wish...

The more I re-read this blog, the funnier it gets.

What is the definition of the word Muff in the North East?

Jason

Yes Andy, why is the word muff funny?

Jason

I've just found a definition in Dr Posner's Tyneside Lexicon of Word Usage and Etimological Gazeteer 3rd Edition (1928) that defines MUFF (noun) as "1. A hirsute garment for the purpose of warming the hand or ear; 2. Polite conversational term for a lady's tuppence or la-la".

AndyC

Yes, Jason, you're absolutely right.

The word "Muff" in this instance refers exclusively to those things which you document in your clever reply.

I remain convinced that this is why they named the service station thus. I also remain convinced that the name "Muff" bears no relation to the service station being in the village of the same name.

I'll happily play fisty-cuffs with anyone who says different.
