Plot Summary for Something's Gotta Give (2003):
Harry Langer (Nicholson) is an aged music industry exec with a fondness for younger women like Marin (Peet), his latest trophy girlfriend. Things get a little awkward when Harry suffers a heart attack at the home of Marin's mother Erica (Keaton). Left in the care of Erica and his doctor (Reeves), a love triangle starts to take shape.
Obviously, this is the film that I watched tonight.
I though I'd write a few words about it before the memory fades and more “important” things come to bear.
I think it's a great film. Often quickly classified as a “chick-flick”, but offering, in truth, far more than 'Mills and Boon' cheap thrills and pointless emotion.
Nicholson, plays a character who always has younger girlfriends - more like one-night stands, actually. The crux of the film is that he falls for the mother of one of his girlfriends and has not got a clue what to do.
It ends up that the mother teaches him more about love and sex than all his previous girlfriends ever had. What changed was that in her, he found someone with whom he really connected, both emotionally and physically - and that made the love-making better than anything he had ever experienced.
I suppose it's a comforting thing, really. Despite it's apparently potent allure, beauty really is only skin deep. Nothing can compete with the strength of that special emotional connection that we call love. The physical act of sex is but one part of a bigger picture, which fails to mean a whole lot without the bond of love.
So, I'm grateful for my own experience the love thing.
And a little relieved.
I thought the role was perfect for Nicholson.
Have you seen About Schmidt? Excellent.

I once fell asleep during About Schmidt, I never did see the end. Not sure that's any refection on the quality of the film, probably just my level of tiredness at the time!
