As Liz is up with us this week, we decided to go out for a meal. Liz hasn't been to a Japanese restaurant before, so it was an opportunity to enjoy the showmanship offered by Newcastle's finest at Fujiyama.
The starters were wonderful, including the most exquisite tempura marinated chicken and a smashing little salad. The main event is, of course, the performance from our own personal chef at the table/hot plate.
Pictured here, you see the raw food, looking all colourful and nice. I won't bore you with all the pictures and movies as it was cooked. Not /all/ of them. Suffice it to say that it was a wonderful night and one that we hope to repeat in the nearish future. (are you listening Jason?)
There's nothing quite like a bit of fire to impress folks. This was /not/ a bit.
On returning home, we had an excellent cup of coffee in the new coffee maker, on the basis that the stuff at home would probably be better than the restaurant - and it would certainly be in more comfortable surroundings. Now I've written that, I suddenly feel very old and rubbish.
In China food is very cheap and in Japan it is very dear, because everything else in those countries is likewise. But why in England is Chinese food so ridiculously cheap and Japanese food so ridiculously dear?
Good Chinese meal in London: £15 a head, good Japanese meal £30. Is it any different up there?

Hi Tony,
For that particular Japanese meal it cost us £23 pounds a head, including drinks and desserts. Outstanding value, but you're right - it does cost more.
In their defence, the chefs must be more highly trained and people friendly. The tables must cost a fortune, because each table is a full cooking surface with extractor fan/hood.
I also believe that they use, on the whole, better quality ingredients. The fillet steak was excellent and the other meats were displayed uncooked, and they looked great.
Including drinks, I doubt we'd spend a lot less on a Chinese meal up here, but it would be a little less.
I hope that goes some way to answering your query. :)
Thanks for dropping by.
