Saturday's the Day

For those unaware, there is a certain special event happening this coming Saturday. It's an event that I have to say I am quite excited about. It is the day when I will be marrying the one and only TL - or Liz as I will now call her, for once. (TL stands for “The Liz” - as Jason excellently called her for some time.)

So here is a picture of exactly how our marriage won't be. No white dress, no tails, no morning suits. No fancy church, no bridesmaids, no procession.

It will be (I hope): Bright, joyous, full of fun, full of genuine heartfelt lifelong commitment, great music, wonderful food, funny moments and a bouncy castle.

Kate Bush & TV Licenses

Took me just a short while to locate my “Kate Bush” poster. I kinda feel better now that this is out in the open. Thanks, Mr. Mavin, for prompting us all to follow the course of openness and honesty. As you can see, TL, this is no fish-wife.

TV Licenses

I was listneing to Radio 4 for a time today whilst in the car, and they ran one of those lovely little adverts for their excellent TV Licences. What made me smile, was the tone and manner of the advert. It was something like this:

[chirpy male voice]

“I pay for my house a little nibble at a time, I pay for my car a little nibble at a time and I pay for my TV a little nibble at a time. Now, I've started paying for my TV license, a little nibble at a time - and so can you!”

Now, if they'd left it at that, fair enough. It's slightly annoying and inane, but otherwise harmless. Sadly, they cannot resist the sheer power given to them by having a law passed enabling them to charge this money. So suddenly the tone changes, and they get a bit nasty:

“If you use a TV, you MUST pay the licence fee. Failure to do so will give us the right to break into your home and smash things.”

Maybe it's just me, but why pretend to be nice about in the first place?

Over here, in dear old Britain (or England, as we're known in the USA), we've often suspected that our slightly ironic and edgy sense of humour was not fully understood by our cousins over the pond.

I don't think there is any better example of this phenomenon than an extremely funny blog entry by my good friend, Jason. He humorously compared two pictures: One by BBC News Web Site Photographer Of The Year finalist, Bud Force, a truly excellent shot and well worthy of the praise it has received. The other, by a friend of mine who likes to take pictures sometimes - great pictures, as it goes, but I doubt she would describe herself as a professional photographer.

I urge you to read the full blog entry and especially the following comments from both Bud himself and also Bud's friend. It's breathtaking. I still can't believe that this was not spotted as an affectionate joke.

...and Bud, if you're reading this - just remember that if you weren't so good, this wouldn't be funny.

I took this brief video the other morning when I shot the sunrise. It captures the wonderful light, although the sound is far more windy than it actually was. I shall have to try and find a way to solve this.

TL Malfuntioning

TL is currently malfunctioning, to the general dismay of us both. Some sort of head malfunction, I'd say. It's kept her completely out of mischief all weekend, and I've had a lovely, and much needed, opportunity to play nursemaid.

She says she suspects her head might explode. I hardly dare break it to her that it already has. I do hope she doesn't look in a mirror.

Anyhow, I already sense your smashing and supportive thoughts winging their way to her.

Brits prefer long life to sex

...or so says a recent poll.

Four out of ten Britons would be prepared to give up sex if it meant they could live to be 100, according to a new poll.

Almost half of the women asked in the Bupa survey said they would take up celibacy to reach the milestone .

However, only 31% of men said they would be prepared to sacrifice nookie for a telegram from the Queen.

Tonight, I'm NOT having...

It would be madness to eat again tonight. I know what I'm like. I'd order something, and then get two bites into it and feel full to the brim.

The reason: I ain't hungry.

Trouble is, I'd then bemoan the waste of food and do my best to eat some of it and then feel truly bloated and terrible as a result. Add into that the guilt of eating an extra meal that I don't need and you have a pretty complete picture of the overall misery in store.

So, tonight, I'm NOT having....

A marinated chicken kebab with pitta wrap, salad, garlic sauce, chilli sauce and chips. I am specifically NOT having this, and I feel great about it.
